There once was a station built by you and me Working together so the music could be free Good people volunteering For the betterment of the St. Louis community But things have started to decay There’s gotta be a better way So Hey KDHX, I got something to say Bring back Andy Coco, & bring Back Drea I love this station with all of my heart But it’s falling apart And it breaks my heart, yes it breaks my heart I usually stay out of the dramas and fights But this is a time when I cannot stay quiet Somebody please come shine a love light Cuz what you’re doing, it just ain’t right You’re pushing everyone away There’s gotta be a better way So Hey KDHX, I got something to say Bring back Andy Coco, & bring Back Drea I love this station with all of my heart But it’s falling apart And it breaks my heart, yes it breaks my heart I guess I’ll just say one more thing We all love music and we all love to sing All those volunteers have so much to bring They’ve given their lives, they’ve given everything So please don’t throw it all away There’s gotta be a better way So Hey KDHX, I got something to say Bring back Andy Coco, & bring Back Drea I love this station with all of my heart So don’t let it fall apart And don’t break my heart, don’t break my heart Don’t break my heart, don’t break my heart

Went down to the river for a while Went down to the river for an hour Out of them riverbanks Came a creature unknown Aw, it was a lizard with a briefcase throwing stones Went down to the station for a while Went down to the station for an hour Out of that train came Old skin and bones Aw, it was a lizard with a briefcase throwing stones Went down to the city for a while Went down to the city for an hour Out of them streets came On his telephone Aw, it was a lizard with a briefcase throwing stones He was scaley and green if you know what I mean Went down to the theater for a while Went down to the theater for an hour Out of them screens came All the features were shown Aw, it was a lizard with a briefcase throwing stones It was a lizard with a briefcase, briefcase throwing Lizard with a briefcase, briefcase throwing Lizard with a briefcase, briefcase throwing stones

There's a heart-shaped hole / in my radio I'm all fired up / with no place to go AI and dead air / is the bold new vision I'm missing that music / and not the only one Missing those voices / and missing their words That sounded like home / wherever they were heard But now the music / is all alone Programmed by / some robot drone How dare they! How can they? / Why did they? What now? Everyone's pissed / but no one knows how To fix this mistake / or turn back time To the left of the dial / where the sound was sublime Wheels are in motion / and the gyres are spinning There's a humble hope / for a new beginning That heart-shaped hole / awaits to be filled With music and memories / of what they killed <instrumental break> Wheels are in motion / and the gyres are spinning There's a humble hope / for a new beginning That heart-shaped hole / awaits to be filled With music and memories / of what they killed

Don’t know what it is about this station But it fueled my imagination It played music no one else ever would Made right in our own neighborhood But now it’s in trouble The leaders in a bubble Don’t know what it is we’ll do To save KDHX for you For you… KDHX made me want to make music 88.1—there’s nothing else like it Andy Coco is the nicest bass dude And Roy Kasten’s voice is smoother than smooth Al Swacker kept me going midday And Ital-K brought reggae our way But now they’re in trouble Like half the DJs out the door Don’t know what it is we’ll do To save KDHX for you For you… When I Feel Like Going Home I just listen and I’m never alone From Memphis to Manchester Positive Vibes had my feelings all astir KDHX made me want to make music 88.1—there’s nothing else like it The station’s in trouble And we really need your help Here’s what we’re gonna do To save KDHX with you With you… So we’re gonna… We're gonna explain that donning the mantle of diversity, equity, and inclusion to hide station leaders' discrimination against DJs publicly disagreeing with their actions is not only a bad look, but also bad karma We're gonna remind the press that volunteer DJs of all cultures, ethnicities, and musical tastes are united in solidarity against the actions of station leaders You know something’s wrong when Dr. Jeff isn’t on your side We're gonna ask, yet again, for station leaders’ resignation We’re gonna ask ‘em to actually fill the board We’re gonna ask ‘em to not sell the station to some fundamentalist group There’s like three hours of non-robot programming a day now… If all else fails, well…we’re gonna get Bob Reuter’s ashes out of the walls, man He’s in the walls, and this is in our DNA We’re gonna save KDHX

We Owe it to the river Our city & ourselves Respect the bids of wisdom To reap a deeper wealth Not for one’s own glory But the greater good of all Like a Dedicated drum line That helps to Keep us marching tall Let me walk beside you friend Together we can share Thoughts that we have gathered Songs to help us & repair Damage that’s Confounding compounding a disgrace But Keep the lines open Love’s still lurking in this place Built on imagination Built on integrity Bound by love of music And this, our community Gone now, those beginnings When, true, we flew so free Not lost, tho, be encouraged We stand in solidarity Let me walk beside you friend Together we can share Thoughts that we have gathered Songs to help us & repair Damage that’s Confounding, compounding a disgrace But Keep the lines open Love’s still lurking in this place Still Sweeter, yes, and fairer Vintage vocals and guitars When they come together To remind us who we are Follow through this darkness Toward the coming dawn Again we’ll dance & gather Our voices clear & strong Let me walk beside you friends Together we can share Thoughts that we have gathered Songs to help us & repair Damage that’s Confounding, compounding a disgrace But Keep the lines open Love’s still lurking in this place Keep the lines open Love’s still lurking in this place

once upon a time and it wasn't long ago there was hometown magic coming through my radio voices of the city and a song for everyone but voices have been silenced and our dreams have come undone and they don't care that it's dead air what we once shared, going nowhere it just ain't fair that it's dead air and they just don't care once upon a time, in an almost mythic past people came together just to build a thing that lasts it survived the lean times and the years of growing pains but how can it survive when outsiders take the reins? and they don't care that it's dead air what we once shared, going nowhere it just ain't fair that it's dead air and they just don't care here's to all the martyrs who were shown the station door here's to those on thin ice with a sound worth fighting for here's to those who still remain to carry on in spite and here's to the villains who are bound to lose the fight and they don't care that it's dead air what we once shared, going nowhere it just ain't fair that it's dead air and they just don't care

Lyrics not recorded (because I can’t sing) but here you go if you want to sing along: VERSE 1 “It turned middle aged in October. Yeah that was quite the day.” “Yeah it’s changed a lot now. Liked it better the old way.” “Yeah KDHX was born as community radio. But it’s lost its way, I have to say, I really do miss it so.” BRIDGE “Now listeners don’t matter. They Ain’t afraid to tell us so.” CHORUS “And we Ain’t failed hippies, and we know what to do.” “Gonna play us some old, gonna play us some new” “And they’re not whiny DJs, they just wanna be treated fair.” “Let us talk at the meetings, and enjoy their presence on the air.” VERSE 2. “Waves Ain’t been the same now, since Soul Selector left the air.” “Can’t say how we feel no more. ‘Cause management just don’t care.” “Alonzo Townsend hit the nail right on the head” “And Darian Wigfall said what needed to be said.” BRIDGE “But the ones up at the top now, they want our station dead.” CHORUS 2 “Yeah we’re not failed hippies. We don’t know just what that means.” “Does it mean we don’t wear tie die, does it mean we don’t wear jeans.” “And they’re not whiny DJs, they know how to get stuff done.” “We’re all for community; now let’s go, and have some fun!” Verse 3 “Drea Stein and Andy Coco. They were my drug of choice. Waves just Ain’t the same now, since we lost our favorite voice. And BobEE Sweet and Mike Kuelker, and all the others gone, We miss ‘em all, we want ‘em back, cause they were treated wrong. BRIDGE The K & G Circus. It Ain’t right what you have done.” CHORUS 2 “Yeah we’re not failed hippies. We don’t know just what that means.” “Does it mean we don’t wear tie die, does it mean we don’t wear jeans.” “And they’re not whiny DJs, they know how to get stuff done.” “We’re all for community; now let’s go, and have some fun!”

about

KDHX, St. Louis' community radio since 1987, is in crisis due to mismanagement, with droves of its volunteer DJs being fired, quitting, striking, or being forced into mediation, and droves of its former donors curtailing their donations.

At the time of writing, over a third of KDHX's time slots are now being run by robots, playing an indifferent (and sometimes wildly inappropriate) selection of tracks without the taste, knowledge, and years of experience that the dedicated volunteer DJs bring to the table.

This album is modern protest music, varied in tone and genre but infused with the fervor of our cause. The musical artists and DJs on this album appear here because they believe in KDHX and want to see it returned to the volunteers and to the community.
