I made a break for light in 1985 Against the day-glo din and the plastic spastic jive I looked for living things that were living under rocks I took their photographs and I put them in a box I thought I had the answers I didn’t want to be told I was so busy living I thought I’d never get old I first came up for air in 1986 For a change of scenery and some wide-eyed wonder kicks I was the passenger in a shit brown Diplomat Movin’ north and movin’ south to wherever it was at I thought I had the answers I didn’t want to be told I was so busy living I thought I’d never get old I walked out in the world in 1988 To find what I could find, the rest I could create I made acquaintances on whom to waste my breath And friends and lovers who could hang in till my death I thought I had the answers I didn’t want to be told I was so busy living I thought I’d never get old

I woke up at the break of dawn I mowed the driveway and shoveled the lawn I hopped in my Dodge and shaved my beard little suspecting my day'd be so weird I had a date with this girl I know she said she wanted to surf in the snow so I grabbed my board and my cool sunglasses we went down the hill and fell on our asses I never wanna surf in the snow again I never wanna surf in the snow I never wanna surf in the snow and you can't make me go! I came to in a hospital bed with a Sony Walkman and tapes by the Dead I asked the doctor, where's my girl? He replied that she'd been attacked by a squirrel I couldn't think of words for this verse so I think I'll snag a couple of lines from the first I woke up at the break of dawn I mowed the driveway and shoveled the lawn I never wanna surf in the snow again I never wanna surf in the snow I never wanna surf in the snow and you can't make me go!
