You lean Louie and we’ll be jake any less is a big mistake keep on dreaming big city dreams I’ll bring goodies and we’ll be good livin’ life in the way we should keep on dreaming big city dreams Are we going to be a pair? are you going to curl my hair? are you going to take me everywhere? You be Jackie and I’ll be John making hay on a foreign lawn keep on dreaming big city dreams I’ll be Andy and you’ll be Anne sure, it’s ragged, but that’s the plan keep on dreaming big city dreams

A thousand roads, a million miles a billion flowers turning into smiles the sun comes up, the sun goes down the sun is shining on this one horse town The hidden world, the secret life the peerless pageantry, the drum and fife a burning bush, a burning cross a burning vision of unending loss And it’s all here, everything that you hold dear it’s all here, polished up and crystal clear it’s all here, it’s all here Another day, another dime another arbitrary slice of time a time to work, a time to play a time to dream the lonely night away Without a word, without a doubt we only want to turn the inside out it’s where we’re from, it’s where we’ve been we only want to turn the outside in And it’s all here, everything that you hold dear it’s all here, polished up and crystal clear it’s all here, it’s all here

My head is full of thunder my thoughts are blowin’ round I feel I’m going under but you just can’t keep a good man down I’m riding on a rocket that’s taking me to Mars I’ll put you in my pocket and we’ll go dancing among the stars And I just stare in wonder as brand new worlds unfold and I just stare in wonder as green turns into gold I’m bangin’ my piano though it’s so out of tune my baby loves the banjo it sends her over the paper moon And still I get the visions from something so mundane a thousand indecisions that keep on rattling through my brain

Randall Random, here he comes, Fuhrer of the pharma bums he’s two left feet and all thumbs gonna use his silver spoon to build a cage around the moon just to prove he’s a buffoon Maybe he’s a psychopath who won’t give out his autograph maybe he just walks the path less taken Randall Random, there he goes, savior of the sloppy Joes comes out smelling like a rose just say yes to his big nope, he’ll be glad to sell you rope if you find it hard to cope Maybe he’s a polymath who didn’t pass the polygraph maybe his life just goes unexamined He’s a crass catastrophe, he’s a faux pas factory he’ll go down in history as a walking World War III Randall Random, here he is, nexus of all crisises unmoved by your grievances drink the Kool-Aid, kiss the boots, kissin’ cousins in cahoots it’s all going down the chutes

Cut 04:16
She’s fire and ice, she’s paradise she is a prison best and the worst, last and the first each time a vision Yeah, you better run, boy she caught me off guard and I took it hard and I took a leap I outlived my use so she cut me loose and she cut me deep When she was young she was among such broken people they taught her to be damaged too tired and feeble Take all you can grab, run up the tab see everything you can see grab all you can take, and if it breaks it just wasn’t meant to be She had to smile for quite a while now she’s too proud to drowned in her downs, she always frowns ‘cos she’s allowed to
7.
what could I do but get high no longer trying to try let the anointed feel so disappointed what could I do but get high what could I do but get lost nervously counting the cost no longer willin’ to fall for a villain what could I do but get lost I’m playing hooky but I ain’t no rookie I know how to cover my tracks I will surrender myself to a bender and maybe learn how to relax what could I do but get out running away from the doubt life is too fleeting to take such a beating what could I do but get out
8.
no one’s gonna bring me down, no push my buttons with a frown, no no one’s gonna shake me no one’s gonna break me no one’s gonna hold me back, no knock my engine off the track, no no one’s gonna judge me no one’s gonna budge me now you could burn your fingers carrying a torch you could get your feelings scorched you could hold on tighter when you should let go but sometimes you just don’t know no one’s gonna lock me in, no when they don’t know where I’ve been, no no one will suspect me no one will reject me now
9.
make the time to be out of time take your place in deep space don’t fuss over us oh, you’re a lonely soul selling all your stole from your father hey, were you cursed from birth was it really worth all the bother, bother when I’m out of reach on that distant beach make the choice to raise up your voice take your truth to the booth don’t quit over it I got wiser and stopped growing older I got sunshine sleeping on my shoulder the universe is in my lap but I just stuff it in my cap and slink away to take a little nap I got weirder and I grew more hairy and I learned that life’s too temporary to be all things to one and all to show up for the cattle call and let them shrink me down to one inch tall make your mind up to know your mind take your fun on the run don’t kill for a thrill
10.
I didn’t think to save your address I didn’t even catch your name I didn’t foresee revelations the day your air mail parcel came, oh yeah the day your air mail parcel came a hundred unfamiliar voices delightful in my atmosphere a thousand reasons to keep living curated by a careful ear, oh yeah curated by a careful ear thank you, brother you brought back the mystery thank you, brother for your sense of history thank you, brother honestly, belatedly yes, it really means that much to me you fueled a flame that had been flickering and that’s why I say it’s a shame I didn’t think to save your address I didn’t even catch your name, oh yeah I didn’t even catch your name
11.
another costume crisis one more awkward change you think the best advice is strange they’ll cut you into slices when they get in range who is this phantom your pursue down every dark and lonely avenue you swear this time you’re really through but blood & glitter always stick to you another pounding heart another restless mind the good times are so hard to find this time you’ll fall apart this time will strike you blind
12.
Complicit #2 03:12
We are all complicit, anyone can see we are all complicit but we say “not me” we are all complicit, everyone discuss we are all complicit but we say “not us” Good to see you, where you been? All the tops refuse to spin and there’s something funny in the air supernova superstars ride around in big black cars and no matter where they are, you’re there All the robots speak all caps in their Turing tourist traps where the trumpeter plays “Taps” downstairs big palookas on the ropes isolate their isotopes while the people send their hopes and prayers Put the children in a box, counterclockwise all the clocks and the western world still rocks and rolls gonna make some men their slaves, gonna send some to their graves no religion’s gonna save their souls, NO!

Sky Ranch 03:55
what is a man consumed with worry what is a man engulfed in flame what is a man who’s in a hurry what is a man who takes the blame and how's he gonna get back home? what is a man who has his freedom what is a man who feels unfree what is a man drove by a demon what is a man who waits to be and how’s he gonna get back home? one day his destiny will meet him one day a great big cheer will greet him one day somebody’s gonna treat him good what is a man whose heart is hollow what is a man who’s gone astray what is a man no one will follow over the hills and far away and how's he gonna get back home? what is a man without a mission what is a man nobody needs what is a man eyed with suspicion what is a man who slowly bleeds and how’s he gonna get back home? one day his destiny will meet him one day a great big cheer will greet him one day somebody’s gonna treat him good and then he’ll know the way back home

about

Loudness and softness. Ditties and epics. Laughter and tears. Pop and rock. Saint Louis' maven of melody is back with a Modern Variety of song stylings to tickle your earbone.

'On Modern Variety, Marek handles all the instrumentation and, on most tracks, a few strands of vocal harmony to boot — his lead vocals tend to land with a wry, winking grin atop his compositions' zippy frenetic energy. The pep of "Big City Dreams" kicks the record off with a start — Marek says he wrote it in tribute to his girlfriend's globe-trotting spirit — and closing track "Sky Ranch" ends the disc with a ruminative piano ballad that wouldn't feel out of place on the Kinks' Muswell Hillbillies.' - Christian Schaeffer, The Riverfront Times, 4/17/19
